About the FKSPCA
Our Mission: The Florida Keys SPCA is dedicated to promoting the humane treatment of all animals through compassionate care, adoption, education, population control and humane law enforcement.
Our primary goal is to place all adoptable animals into caring, loving, lifelong homes. We are working toward this goal by reducing companion animal overpopulation. All animals adopted from our shelter are spayed and neutered prior to adoption. We provide low-cost and free spay and neuter surgeries to the companion animals of our community. In addition, we work diligently with other humane organizations in the Florida Keys to reduce the number of feral cats through trap, spay/neuter, and release projects.
The Florida Keys SPCA is a completely independent, private, not-for-profit organization. We are not under the umbrella of, nor are we funded by any other national humane organization. While we receive funds from Monroe County under our contract to provide animal control services in our jurisdiction, maintaining the high standards of care we provide for our animals, including veterinary care, and other important programs such as spay/neuter and community outreach can only be accomplished through donations from people like you. Every donation, large and small, is important, needed and much appreciated. Thank you for the part you play in helping us help the animals in our care.
About our Shelter
Open Admissions: No animal is turned away – whether an owner needs to surrender a pet (regardless of the reason) or a stray pet is in need of a safe haven while waiting for its owner or a new home. More than 1,500 animals come into our shelter each year.
Pets Waiting for Adoption: There is no time limit on how long an animal can stay with us while waiting for its new home.
We help all pets: We adopt out more than dogs and cats. We often also have rabbits, birds, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, rats, and reptiles.
We Treat Injuries and Illness: While most animals arrive at our shelter healthy and ready for a new home, many arrive either sick or injured. We treat broken bones, skin and ear infections, heartworms, and many more medical issues so that our animals can start their new lives healthy and happy.
Behavior Training: Our knowledgeable staff works with the animals in our care to teach them basic “manners” and to address behavior issues. We also offer guidance to owners with in-home behavior problems.
Animal Cruelty and Neglect Investigation: The Florida Keys SPCA acts on all reports of animal abuse or neglect from Key West to mile marker 16.7. We respond to over 500 calls each year. A Florida Keys SPCA staff member can be reached 24 hours a day for emergency purposes.
